How to use the spacebar counter on mobile
- Pick a time (or type your own seconds) and tap the large pad. The first tap starts the clock and counts as press number one.
- Keep tapping the pad with one or two thumbs until the timer hits zero. Each touch is one press.
- Have a Bluetooth or USB keyboard connected? Press its Space key instead – physical key presses are counted exactly like on a computer.
- When time is up the result window opens and the pad locks until you press Restart. Turn on Do Not Disturb first so a notification cannot interrupt the run.

What is a spacebar counter?
A spacebar counter is a free online tool that counts how many times you press the space bar in a set time and turns the total into presses per second (PPS). It is also called a spacebar clicker, space bar speed test or spacebar test. Gamers use it to warm up before a match, friends use it to settle who is fastest, and many people just like beating their own record.
This counter runs in your browser with no download and no signup. It listens for real keyboard events, so a physical key press and a tap on the on-screen pad are both counted, and it ignores the repeat signal your keyboard sends when you hold the key down. That is why holding Space never inflates your score.
How to use the spacebar counter
- Choose a test time with the buttons above the counter, from 1 second to 2 minutes, or type your own number of seconds (1–300) and press Set time.
- Press the spacebar to start. The first press starts the timer and counts as press number one. On a phone, tap the big pad instead.
- Keep pressing until the timer reaches zero. The pad then locks, so a stray press cannot change your result.
- A result window opens with your total, average PPS, fastest and slowest second, a consistency score and a chart. Join with Google or an email to add your score to the Top 500 under your own name, or just save a nickname to keep playing as that player.
- Press Restart to run it again. Your personal best for each test time is saved in your browser.
How to use the spacebar counter on mobile
You do not need a keyboard to use this counter on an iPhone, Android phone or tablet. Tap the large pad with one or two thumbs and each touch counts as one press. The pad registers the instant your finger lands, so there is no delay waiting for a release. Turn on Do Not Disturb first so a notification cannot interrupt a run, and hold the phone in landscape if you want a bigger target.
If you pair a Bluetooth or USB keyboard with your phone or tablet, press its Space key and the counter treats it exactly like a computer would. Touch scores and keyboard scores are different inputs, so compare like with like. The full walkthrough is in the phone and tablet guide.
Choose your spacebar test time
Different test times measure different things. Short tests reward a fast burst; longer tests reward rhythm and stamina. Pick the page that matches what you want to measure:
| Test time | What it measures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| one second burst drill | Pure burst and reaction | Warm-ups and quick bets |
| five second pace sample | Burst plus a short rhythm | A fast, repeatable benchmark |
| ten second tapping baseline | Pace you can hold briefly | The standard spacebar speed test |
| half minute pace benchmark | Rhythm and consistency | Seeing where your pace drops |
| one minute endurance check | Stamina and comfort | Endurance and Top 500 attempts |
| two minute sustained run | Sustained effort | Long-session practice |
All fourteen durations, from 1 second to 2 minutes, are listed on the timing option list. Prefer no clock at all? Use the untimed counting mode.
Three other ways to test the spacebar
A speed score does not explain every keyboard skill. Use a dedicated visual cue response drill to measure responses to a visual cue, the beat matching exercise to match an external beat, or the rapid re press diagnostic to inspect browser-observed key-down and key-up timing.
What is a good spacebar score?
Most people land between about 4 and 7 presses per second on a 10-second test. Practised players can reach 8 to 10, and very short bursts can go higher than anything you can hold for a minute. These are informal practice ranges, not measured statistics from this site, so use them as targets and trust your own chart more than any average.
| Pace | Presses per second | Presses in 10 seconds |
|---|---|---|
| Warm-up | 4.5 | 45 |
| Comfortable | 6 | 60 |
| Fast | 8 | 80 |
| Very fast | 10 | 100 |
The press rate scoring guide explains how to read your total, your PPS and your consistency score for every test time.
How accurate is this spacebar counter?
The counter timestamps each key press with the browser’s high-resolution clock and counts only presses that land before the timer ends. The countdown is driven by a precise timer and backed up by a second one, so it still finishes on time if the screen briefly stalls. What it cannot remove is the delay inside your keyboard, your operating system and your browser, which is usually a few milliseconds and affects every counter the same way.
For fair comparisons, use the same keyboard, browser and test time. The timing accuracy guide covers timer precision, input lag, key repeat and background-tab throttling in detail.
Spacebar counter vs. CPS test
A spacebar counter counts keyboard presses. A CPS (clicks per second) test counts mouse clicks or screen taps. The switch under your finger, the way you move and the input path through the browser are all different, so a 7 PPS spacebar score and a 7 CPS click score are not the same achievement. Use the mouse click speed check for mouse speed and the mouse double click behaviour check to check how quickly your mouse button resets. The PPS and CPS comparison guide explains the differences.
Benefits of a spacebar speed test
- Warm up for games. Many games use the space bar for jumping, shooting or confirming, so a quick burst loosens your finger.
- Track progress. Your best score and attempts for each test time are saved, so you can see whether practice is working.
- Compete with friends. Share the result text or compare ranks on the Top 500 list.
- Check your keyboard. A key that misses presses shows up as a flat spot on the chart. See missed key fix guide.
- Free and private. No registration is needed and your history stays on your device unless you submit a score.
How to press the spacebar faster
Speed comes from relaxed repetition, not force. Rest your hand so the finger or thumb you use hovers above the key, keep your wrist level, and use short strokes that let the key return fully. Try different fingers and a thumb to see which one gives the steadiest chart. Practise in short sessions with rests, mix test times, and stop if anything hurts. The space key practice guide has a two-week routine you can follow.
Spacebar games and challenges
When you want a break from counting, try the free browser mini game collection: the obstacle jump runner, the wave based space shooter, the block stacking challenge and the press and upgrade game. Each one is played with the space bar or a tap, and none needs a download.
How the Top 500 leaderboard works
After each timed test a window lets you join with Google or an email address, which submits the result you just played to the player score ranking page with your player name and avatar. Guests can still save a nickname. Each player appears once per test time with their best score. Scores that are physically impossible are rejected automatically, unusually fast ones are held for a human check, and the list only ever shows real submissions.
Spacebar clicker, space bar speed test and spacebar click test: what is the difference?
People search for this tool under many names: spacebar counter, spacebar clicker, space counter, space bar speed test, spacebar test, spacebar click test, spacebar tapping test and keyboard counter. They all mean the same thing: a page that counts how many times you press the space bar in a chosen time and reports presses per second (PPS), sometimes written as keys per second (KPS) or hits per second. Whatever you call it, the maths is total presses divided by seconds, which is why a 10-second test with 60 presses and a 30-second test with 180 presses both give 6 PPS.
Use the spacebar counter to test your keyboard
A spacebar counter is also a quick way to check a keyboard. If a key sometimes fails to register, the live chart shows a flat spot or a dip even though you kept pressing. If one press produces two counts (key chatter, caused by a worn switch or a debounce problem), your total jumps above what you expected. Test the same keyboard on different days, compare two keyboards on the same test time, and try a new switch type, such as membrane against mechanical, to see how actuation point and key travel change your pace. If the space bar feels sticky or double-registers, the missed key fix guide lists what to check.
Why scores differ between keyboards, browsers and devices
- Switch type and actuation point. Light, short-travel switches register earlier than deep, stiff ones.
- Polling rate and input lag. A keyboard that reports more often has less delay between your finger and the browser.
- Browser and device load. A busy computer or a background tab can add small delays. Close heavy tabs for a fair test.
- Input method. A physical keyboard, a Bluetooth keyboard and a touchscreen pad behave differently, so compare like with like.
- Technique. Finger choice, posture and how relaxed your hand is matter at least as much as hardware.
The spacebar challenge with friends and on social media
Timed spacebar challenges are a popular game among friends, teams and on short-video platforms such as TikTok: everyone takes the same test, such as the 10-second or 1-minute test, and compares totals. To keep it fair, agree the test time, use the same type of input, and screenshot or copy the result from the result window. If you want a permanent scoreboard, join the Top 500 and your score, name and avatar are listed for everyone to see.
Does the spacebar counter work at school or work (“unblocked”)?
The counter runs entirely in your web browser. There is nothing to download or install and it needs no extension, so it works on any computer, phone or tablet that can open the page. Whether a website can be opened at all is decided by the network you are on, and we do not provide ways around school or workplace restrictions. Follow your organisation’s rules about what you may use at school or work.
Spacebar counter or typing speed test?
A typing test measures words per minute across many keys; a spacebar counter measures one key at its fastest. They train different things. If your goal is faster typing, use a typing test and use this tool for finger speed, rhythm and keyboard checks. The keyboard versus mouse comparison compares the spacebar test with mouse click speed.
Spacebar counter FAQ
How many times can you press the spacebar in 10 seconds?
A relaxed pace of 5 to 6 presses per second gives roughly 50 to 60 presses in 10 seconds. Fast players aim for 80 or more. Your chart matters more than the total: an even line means a pace you can repeat.
What is a spacebar test?
A spacebar test counts how many times you press the space bar in a chosen time and shows the total and your presses per second. It is a quick way to measure finger speed, warm up for games or compete with friends.
What is a good score on a spacebar counter?
About 6 presses per second is a comfortable pace for most people on a 10-second test, 8 or more is fast, and 10 or more is very fast. Longer tests naturally average lower than short bursts.
How can I tap the space bar faster?
Relax your hand, keep your wrist level, use short strokes and practise in short sessions. Try a thumb as well as a finger, mix 5, 10 and 30 second tests, and rest between runs.
Why does holding the spacebar not raise my score?
Holding a key makes the keyboard send repeat signals. The counter ignores them, so only separate presses count. Release the key between presses.
Does the spacebar counter work on a phone?
Yes. Tap the on-screen pad and every touch counts as one press, or press the Space key on a connected Bluetooth or USB keyboard. See the mobile guide for tips.
Why did the counter stop counting when time ran out?
That is by design. When the timer ends the pad locks so extra presses cannot change your result. Press Restart to run a new test.
Can I set my own test time?
Yes. Type any number of seconds from 1 to 300 in the time box and press Set time. Custom times are saved to your history but only the standard times appear on the Top 500 lists.
Is the spacebar counter accurate?
It uses high-resolution timestamps and counts only presses before the timer ends. Small delays in your keyboard and browser still exist, so compare scores from the same setup.
Do I need to sign up to play?
No. The counter is free and works without an account. A free player account is only needed if you want your score, name and avatar on the Top 500 list.
Is a spacebar clicker the same as a spacebar counter?
Yes. Spacebar counter, spacebar clicker, space bar speed test and spacebar click test are different names for the same kind of tool: it counts your presses over a set time and shows presses per second.
What is the world record for pressing the spacebar in 1 second?
There is no official, verified record, and figures you see online are self-reported and cannot be checked. The submitted score list lists scores submitted by real players here, with impossible scores rejected, but it is a community ranking rather than a certified record.
Can you press the spacebar 500 times in a minute?
500 presses in 60 seconds is 8.3 presses per second held for the full minute (500 divided by 60). That is a demanding steady pace. Try the one minute endurance check and check your chart to see how close you get.
Can I test a faulty spacebar with this counter?
Yes. Use the untimed counting mode and press at a steady rhythm. If presses go missing, or one press counts twice, the key or its switch may be worn, dirty or misconfigured. Try another keyboard to see if the problem follows the key.
What is KPS and how is it different from PPS?
KPS means keys per second and PPS means presses per second. On a spacebar test they are the same number because only one key is counted.
How do I join the Top 500 and get an avatar?
Finish a standard timed test. In the result window choose Continue with Google or create an account with an email, then pick an avatar or upload your own picture on your player profile page. Your score is submitted when you join.
Do I need a Google account to join?
No. You can create an account with an email and password. Google sign-in is just the fastest way to join.
