Spacebar Test Not Working? Fixes That Work

Fix a spacebar counter that is not counting, double counting or scrolling the page: focus, key repeat, extensions, keyboard and browser checks.

Spacebar test not working: eight fixes

  1. Click the page once. The counter needs keyboard focus. Click an empty area or the pad, then press Space. Do not click in a text box.
  2. Check the pad is not locked. After a test ends, the pad stays locked until you press Restart.
  3. Release between presses. Holding the key sends repeat events, which are ignored. Lift your finger fully each time.
  4. Close other tabs and apps. Heavy pages can delay input and slow timers.
  5. Disable extensions. Ad blockers, key remappers and accessibility tools can intercept Space. Try a private window.
  6. Try another browser. Test in the latest Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari.
  7. Test a different keyboard. A worn switch, crumbs or a sticky stabiliser can miss presses. Try another keyboard or the on-screen pad.
  8. Check keyboard settings. Sticky Keys, Filter Keys and repeat-rate settings can change how keys register.

The page scrolls when I press Space

Space normally scrolls a page. While you are on a counter page the tool blocks that, and focused buttons are not activated by Space either. If the page still scrolls, click the page once to give it focus. An extension may also be intercepting keys; test in a private window.

It counts too many presses

This counter ignores repeat events, so holding Space adds only one. If you see extra counts, a keyboard with a fault may be sending a double press (called chatter). Run the 5-second test slowly and watch whether the count jumps by two. Try another keyboard to confirm.

It counts too few presses

Missed presses can come from a worn switch, a very light touch that does not register, or a keyboard that limits how many keys it reports at once (rollover). Press a bit more firmly, test a different keyboard, and compare with the CPS test to see whether it is just the keyboard.

The timer looks slow or jumpy

Browsers slow down timers in background tabs and on low-power mode. Keep the tab visible, plug in a laptop and close heavy apps. The result still uses an exact end time, so the score is not affected by how smoothly the numbers redraw.

Spacebar test not working on mobile

Tap the pad instead of using the keyboard, or tap the page once so a connected Bluetooth keyboard has focus. See the mobile guide.

Is it the keyboard, the browser or the page?

To find where the problem is, try three things in order. First, test the key in another place, such as a plain text box, to see whether the keyboard registers it. Second, open the counter in a private window or a different browser to rule out extensions. Third, plug the keyboard into another port or try another keyboard. If the problem follows the keyboard, clean it or replace the switch; if it follows the browser, disable extensions that capture keys or scroll pages.

Spacebar test troubleshooting FAQ

Why is my spacebar counter not counting?

Most often the page has no focus or the test is locked after finishing. Click the page, press Restart if needed, and try again.

Why does holding Space count only once?

Repeat events are ignored on purpose so only separate presses count.

How do I know if my spacebar is broken?

If it misses presses or double-registers on several sites and keyboards, the switch may be worn. Try another keyboard to compare.

Why does my spacebar test count twice?

Usually the key’s switch is chattering or a debounce or accessibility setting is repeating presses. Test the key in a text box and try another keyboard to find out.
