Privacy Policy

How Spacebar Counter handles test history, player accounts, leaderboard submissions, the newsletter, cookies and advertising. Last updated: October 22, 2026.

Who we are

Spacebar Counter is run by an independent site owner who is the controller of the personal data described here. You can reach us through the contact page.

Information stored in your browser

The counter saves your recent results, personal bests and the guest player name you choose in your browser’s local storage. The games may save their own progress there too. This information stays on your device, is not sent to our server and can be removed by clearing site data in your browser.

Player accounts

If you join, we store your email address, your player name, your avatar (a built-in choice, your Google profile picture, or a picture you upload), how you signed up (email or Google) and your account settings. Passwords are stored only as a salted hash by WordPress; we cannot read them. With Google sign-in we receive your name, verified email address and profile picture from Google, and we do not receive your Google password.

Leaderboard submissions

When you submit a score we store the player name, test type, test time, score, rate per second, the status (published, pending or rejected), the date and time, and the account it came from if you are logged in. Published entries, including your player name and avatar, are visible to everyone. Do not use your real name, email address or other personal information as a player name. Your email address is never shown publicly.

Newsletter

If you subscribe, we store your email address, optional name, the page you subscribed from, the date, and whether you confirmed. We send emails only to confirmed subscribers, every email contains a one-click unsubscribe link, and we keep a record of unsubscribes so we do not email you again. We use our own site and email service to send them. You can also unsubscribe on your account page.

Contact messages

If you use the contact form we receive your name, email address and message, and we use them only to reply and to keep a record of the request.

Spam protection

To limit abuse, the site temporarily keeps a salted, hashed token derived from your IP address for up to about an hour to count sign-ups, logins, subscriptions and score submissions from one connection. The raw IP address is not stored with your score or account.

Cookies, advertising and Google

The site uses essential cookies and browser storage, a login cookie if you sign in, and, with your permission, advertising cookies from Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to serve ads based on your visits to this and other websites. You can choose Accept all or Decline personalised ads in the cookie banner, change your choice at any time with the Cookie settings link, and opt out of personalised advertising at adssettings.google.com or aboutads.info. See how Google uses data from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. Full details are in the Cookie Policy.

Server logs

Like most websites, our hosting provider may keep standard server logs, such as IP address, browser type and pages requested, for security and operation.

Why we use your data and our legal basis

  • To run the tools, accounts and leaderboard you asked for (performance of a contract).
  • To keep the site secure and fair, for example by checking scores and limiting abuse (legitimate interests).
  • To send the newsletter and to show personalised ads (your consent, which you can withdraw at any time).

Your rights

  • See, correct or delete your account details on your account page, including deleting your account and every score at once.
  • Unsubscribe from the newsletter with one click, or switch it off on your account page.
  • Ask for a copy of your data, or for erasure, through the contact page. We also support the WordPress export and erase tools.
  • Withdraw consent for personalised ads with the Cookie settings link.
  • If you live in the EEA, UK or another region with data protection law, you may also complain to your local data protection authority. California residents have the right to know, delete and opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information; we do not sell personal information.

Retention

Account data and scores are kept until you delete your account or ask us to remove them. Unsubscribed addresses are kept only as an opt-out record. Contact messages are kept for as long as needed to deal with them.

Children

The site is not directed at children under 13, and accounts and the newsletter are for people aged 16 and over, or the age of digital consent in your country. If a child submits personal data, a parent or guardian can ask us to remove it.

International transfers and sharing

We share data only with service providers that help us run the site (hosting, email delivery, Google for sign-in and advertising) and when the law requires it. These providers may process data outside your country.

Changes

We may update this policy as the site changes. The current version is always on this page, with the date above.
