How to use this test on a phone or tablet
  1. Pick a time and tap or click the big pad. The first touch starts the timer.
  2. Keep tapping until the timer ends. The pad locks and the result window opens; press Restart to try again.
  3. Touchscreen scores and mouse scores are different inputs, so compare like with like.

What is a double click test?

A double click test checks how fast and how reliably you can click twice in a row. In this test, two clicks within 0.35 seconds count as one double click. The tool counts double clicks, shows your average per second and records the shortest gap between two clicks in milliseconds.

How to take the double click test

  1. Pick a test time from 5 to 60 seconds.
  2. Double-click the pad. The first click starts the timer.
  3. Keep double-clicking until time is up. Each pair of clicks within 0.35 seconds adds one.
  4. Read your total, per-second rate and fastest gap in the result window.

Why check your double click speed?

  • Spot a mouse that registers a single click as two (a common switch fault).
  • See whether a new mouse or a changed double-click speed setting behaves as you expect.
  • Practise rhythm for games that use fast double taps.

If one click is sometimes counted twice, run a few rounds and watch for gaps far below 50 ms with no deliberate double click. That can point to a worn switch. Compare with the plain CPS test, and see troubleshooting input problems for general checks.

Single clicks, double clicks and timing

Your operating system decides whether two clicks are a double by checking the time between them, usually a few tenths of a second. This page uses a fixed window of 0.35 seconds so results do not depend on your system settings. The first click of a pair starts the window, the second must land inside it, and after a successful pair the next click begins a new one. That makes the score a mix of speed and rhythm: clicking too fast across pairs can merge them, while clicking too slowly inside a pair breaks it.

Tips for a higher score

  • Keep the clicks inside a pair quick and the pause between pairs steady.
  • Use a light touch and rest your wrist on the desk.
  • Run two or three rounds; the first is often the slowest.

How to change your system double-click speed

On Windows, open Mouse settings and look for Double-click speed. On macOS, open System Settings, choose Mouse or Trackpad and adjust Double-click speed. Changing it only affects how your system interprets two clicks, not this test, which uses its own 0.35-second window.

Why a mouse double clicks by itself

If your mouse registers two clicks when you pressed once, the usual causes are a worn microswitch (the part under the button that makes the click), dust or debris, a driver or software setting, or a very short debounce setting that no longer filters electrical bounce. The double click test helps you spot this by showing the shortest gap between two clicks in milliseconds: gaps far below what a human can do on purpose, with no deliberate double click, suggest a switch fault.

How to fix a mouse double-click problem

  1. Run the test with a single deliberate click at a time and see whether a double is ever counted.
  2. Check your operating system’s double-click speed setting and any mouse software for custom button or debounce options.
  3. Update or reinstall the mouse driver, and try a different USB port or a wired connection.
  4. Clean around the button with compressed air and make sure nothing is stuck under it.
  5. Try the mouse on another computer. If the problem follows the mouse, the switch is probably worn.
  6. If the mouse is under warranty, ask the maker for a replacement. Replacing a switch yourself is possible for some mice but usually voids the warranty.

Double click speed, delay and timing explained

Two clicks count as a double click when the gap between them is shorter than your system’s double-click interval, usually a few tenths of a second. Windows and macOS let you change that interval. This page uses a fixed window of 0.35 seconds so results are the same on every device. The fastest gap you see is the time between two clicks of one pair, a number that depends on your finger speed, your mouse switch and your polling rate.

Double click test FAQ

What counts as a double click here?

Two clicks on the pad within 0.35 seconds. The next click starts a new pair.

What is a fast gap between clicks?

Deliberate fast double clicks often fall between 80 and 150 milliseconds, but it varies by person and mouse. Use your own results for comparison.

Is my mouse broken if I get odd results?

Not necessarily. Test a few times, try another surface and mouse if you can, and check for gaps that look like accidental double registrations.

Does it work on touchscreens?

Yes, tap twice quickly. Taps and mouse clicks are different inputs, so compare them separately.

Why does my mouse double click when I click once?

Most often the microswitch under the button is worn or dirty, or a setting or driver is misreporting clicks. Use this test to see whether single clicks are sometimes counted twice.

How can I test my mouse double-click speed?

Take the test above for 5 to 60 seconds and check your total double clicks and your fastest gap in milliseconds. Repeat on another mouse to compare.

What is mouse debounce?

Debounce is a short delay in a mouse that ignores the tiny electrical bounce when a switch closes, so one press is not read as many. Too little can cause double clicks; too much can drop fast clicks.
