How to Use the Spacebar Counter on Mobile

Use the spacebar counter on iPhone, Android and tablets: tap the on-screen pad, pair a Bluetooth keyboard and fix common touch problems.

Can you use a spacebar counter on a phone?

Yes. This counter is built for phones and tablets as well as computers. There is no space bar on a touch screen, so the large pad on the page takes its place: every touch counts as one press. You can also connect a Bluetooth or USB keyboard and press its real Space key.

How to use the spacebar counter on mobile, step by step

  1. Open the spacebar counter in your phone’s browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Samsung Internet all work).
  2. Choose a test time from the scrolling row of buttons, or type your own seconds in the box and tap Set time.
  3. Tap the large pad. The first touch starts the timer and counts as press number one.
  4. Keep tapping with one or two thumbs until time is up. The pad then locks so late touches do not count.
  5. Read your result in the window that opens, then enter a player name to join the Top 500 or tap Restart to try again.

Tips for the best mobile result

  • Turn on Do Not Disturb so a notification cannot interrupt a run.
  • Use landscape if you want a bigger pad and more room for both thumbs.
  • Keep the screen on and the tab in the foreground for the whole test.
  • Clean the screen and take off a thick case or glove if taps feel unresponsive.
  • Use the same device for score comparisons. Different screens report touches differently.

Using an external keyboard with your phone or tablet

Pair a Bluetooth keyboard in your phone’s settings, or plug in a USB keyboard with an adapter, then open the counter and press Space. The browser sends the same keyboard events as on a computer, so the counter works exactly the same way, including ignoring key repeat. On iPad, make sure the page has focus by tapping it once first.

Touch scores and keyboard scores are different

Tapping a glass screen and pressing a physical key are different movements with different input delays. A touch score is not directly comparable with a keyboard score, so keep a separate record for each. The spacebar counter vs. CPS test guide explains why input type matters.

Spacebar counter not working on mobile?

  • Taps are missed. Check the screen protector, remove gloves and try a clean fingertip.
  • The page zooms or scrolls. Tap inside the pad only; the pad blocks double-tap zoom. Reload if it persists.
  • The timer seems slow. Close other apps and keep the tab in the foreground.
  • Keyboard presses do nothing. Tap the page once to focus it, then press Space. See spacebar test not working.

iPhone, Android and tablet: what changes on a touchscreen

On a phone or tablet the counter uses a large on-screen pad instead of a physical key. A tap is counted the moment your finger lands, with no wait for the lift, and each touch is one press. Multi-touch with two thumbs works, but screens differ in how many simultaneous touches and how fast successive touches they report, so scores can differ between devices. If you pair a Bluetooth keyboard, press its Space key and the tool counts it like a computer would.
