Read your presses-per-second chart and consistency score, find where your pace drops and practise steadier spacebar speed.
What is a spacebar speed consistency test?
A single average hides how your pace changed during a test. A consistency test looks at each second separately. After every timed run the counter draws a chart of presses per second and gives a consistency score, so you can see whether you stayed steady, started too fast or faded at the end.
How the consistency score works
The score is 100 minus the coefficient of variation of your per-second counts. In plain terms, the more your seconds differ from your average, the lower it is. A perfectly even run scores 100%. It needs at least three seconds, and it is most meaningful on tests of ten seconds or more.
| Consistency | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| 90–100% | Very steady; an even rhythm |
| 75–89% | Mostly steady with a small fade or a slow start |
| 60–74% | Noticeably uneven; a spike, dip or pause |
| Below 60% | A big drop, pause or very uneven run |
These bands are rough guides for reading your own chart, not official grades.
How to read your chart
- Starts high then slopes down: you began too fast. Start at about 90% effort.
- Dips in the middle: tension. Relax your shoulder and use smaller strokes.
- Zigzag: uneven rhythm. Count in your head and aim for the same number each second.
- Falls at the end: fatigue. Practise longer runs at a slightly lower pace.
- Flat zero in one second: a pause, a missed key, or a finger change.
Which test is best for consistency?
The 30-second test gives enough data to be meaningful without being too tiring. Use the 10-second test for a quick check and the 1-minute test for stamina. Compare average PPS across lengths to see how much you lose over time.
Drills to improve consistency
- Run the 30-second test at 90% effort and aim for a consistency score above 85%.
- Try to hit the same number of presses each second for ten seconds, using a metronome if you like.
- Practise relaxing your hand deliberately every few seconds.
- Re-test weekly and compare charts, not just totals.

How the consistency score is calculated
Consistency compares how much your pace varies from second to second with your average pace. A run where every second has the same number of presses scores close to 100%. A run with a big burst followed by a slump scores lower. It needs at least three seconds of data, so very short tests do not show one. Use it alongside your total: a slightly lower total with a steady line is often the pace you can improve from.
Consistency test FAQ
What is a good consistency score?
About 85% or higher means a steady run. Scores under about 70% usually show a clear spike or drop.
Why is my consistency N/A on short tests?
The score needs at least three seconds of data. Take a test of three seconds or longer.
Does a high consistency score mean a high score?
No. You can be very steady at a slow pace. Aim for steady and then raise the pace gradually.
